Sinorhizobium meliloti (formerly Rhizobium meliloti), is a common Gram-negative soil and rhizosphere bacterium, that forms nitrogen-fixing nodules on the roots of certain genera of leguminous plants, including Medicago, Melilotus and Trigonella sp.
