8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine (8-oxoG) is a pre-mutagenic DNA lesion that is formed by the oxidation of guanine. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) that is primarily responsible for the damage of guanine is produced as a result of several endogenous processes or environmental agents. ROS can cause damage to cellular macromolecules like proteins, lipids and nucleic acids.
